Giambattista is a screen font based loosely on Bodoni. The proportions are very close to Chicago, so if you have a utility which allows you to substitute another font for Chicago (such as Peter Bryant’s “sysFont™,” a $5 shareware INIT available from CIS as SYSFON.SIT in library 3 of the Macintosh Systems Forum), Giambattista will work nicely. It is a bold serif font with more conventional letterforms than Chicago. I have included the special characters (diamond, checkmark, apple, and cloverleaf) for this purpose. It could also be used as a bold font for HyperCard stacks or other on-screen applications.
Giambattista has limited usefulness, since it wasn’t designed for printing and does not correspond to anything WYSIWYG. It exists only as a bitmap, and does not contain fractional widths. So far, I have only done the 12 point bitmapped version of the font. I hope to create an outline version in both Type 1 PostScript™ and TrueType formats in the near future and possibly other bitmap font sizes.
I would like to thank Susan Lesch for suggesting that I upload this font. I designed it back in 1985 or 86 as a screen font to use with Infocom games and had more or less forgotten about it.
Comments are welcomed.
Giambattista is in the public domain.
Note for the curious: “Giambattista” was Mr. Bodoni’s first name and is Italian for “James” (I think).
